Bishop LeBlond faced another obstacle late in the fourth quarter.

This time, the Golden Eagles prevailed.

Their defense made three straight stops with just more than a minute remaining and held on this week 27-20 to defeat East Buchanan.

The Bulldogs (1-1) used a huge run from quarterback Tyler Schottel to get within five yards of a 15-point comeback. Schottel completed a 36-yard pass to sophomore receiver Ethan Kilgore. And Schottel followed that up with a 7-yard pass to put East Buchanan on the 4-yard line.

However, LeBlond’s defense stood its ground and junior cornerback Jack Jarrett stopped three straight passes against the the 6-foot-5 Kilgore.

LeBlond coach Tony Dudik could hardly believe how much excitement the night brought after last season’s murky 8-0 win in overtime.

“It was like a dadgum roller coaster,” said Dudik, who’s been at LeBlond for the past eight seasons. “First of all, it was wonderful, because the last two years it’s been dadgum downpour and wet field. Both teams played their heart out.”

Last week, LeBlond led 27-12 entering the final quarter but gave up three last-quarter scores to squander away a win against Pembroke Hill.

Jacob Raczkowski led the Eagles’ offense rushing 25 times for 146 yards and a 55-yard touchdown. The senior running back showed off his power and ability to be a workhorse in the backfield, especially after rushing 28 times last week in the three-point loss.

Raczkowski felt he had a chip on his shoulder after facing the Bulldogs the past two seasons.

“I just tried to keep pounding my feet,” Raczkowski explained. “This has been our rival. I’ve played them the past two years so I had a chip on my shoulder coming in. I wanted to beat them really, really bad.

“We got that done so I’m really happy.”
