Penney tops East Buchanan to clinch KCI

The Hamilton-Penny Hornets came into the last game of the regular season trying to remain undefeated, and they had no problem as they crushed the East Buchanan Bulldogs, 56 -12.
The Hornets started fast, taking the opening kickoff and scoring when quarterback Jaran Richman kept scrambling away from defenders until he could connect on a 39 yard pass to LaTroy Harper. Running back T. C. East rumbled in for the two point conversion.
After the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs, Harper went behind center for this drive. Harper called his own number and scored on an 18 yard run. The two point run was stopped and at the end of the first quarter the Hornets were up 14 - 0.
The Bulldogs answered back as Tyler Schottel found Ethan Kilgore in the corner of the end zone, from 14 yards out. The two point pas was no good, and with 10:47 in the half the Bulldogs were down by 8 points.
Then the Hornets took over, starting with a 26 yard pass from Richman to Harper. Harper appeared to be stopped twice inside of the 10 yard line but refused to be denied. The two point run was stopped short.
One minute, 59 seconds later, the Hornets scored on a bruising 4 yard run from, East. Richman hooked up with Cale Whitt for the two point conversion.
After the Bulldogs turned the ball over on downs, the Hornets kept rolling as Harper outran the defense again going for 57 yards. The two point run was no good.
The Bulldogs next drive started from their own 6 yard line. They were forced backwards by the swarming Hornets defense, and had to punt out of their own end zone. Harper returned the punt back to the Bulldog 12 yard line, with just 11 seconds before halftime.
Richman took the snap, and calmly surveyed the field and found Whitt for the touchdown. The two teammates also converted on the two point conversion as Richman threw the pass more like shot put, than a football. The Hornets went to the locker room up 42 - 6.
The Hornets defense, picked off a pass to give the offense a short field. Brock Swindler rambled for a 17 yard score. East converted the PAT.
The Hornets scored one more time as Richman went around the corner and scored on a 39 yard run. Swindler converted the PAT.
The Bulldogs kept fighting until the end, when freshman quarterback Tucker White, completed a 54 yard touchdown pass to Tristen Smith. The two point pass was incomplete.
After the game Hornets head coach Caleb Obert had high praise for both sides of the ball.
“We scored everytime we had the ball with our ones on the field,” Obert said. “That was one of our goals and I challenged the kid, that’s what we wanted to do. Offensive line came out and played awesome. Our skill guys did great and we played about as good as we can play.”
Obert then talked about the play of his defensive line.
We try to put them in position, but they put themselves in great position,” Obert said. “They’re good and the just have a motor to get the quarterback, or find the football.”
Both teams will begin the playoffs, next week with home games, against opponents to be determined.
