SM East rolls past Olathe East

Dustin Delaney wanted to get Shawnee Mission East’s game against Olathe East in its entirety in on Thursday night instead of having to return on Friday afternoon, but he knew that wasn’t going to happen with the weather system sweeping through the area once play was halted.
The Lancers head coach knew he’d be missing two offensive lineman — Parker Shirling and Charlie Kephart — who were out of town.
“Our philosophy is next man up and our kids did a good job of that today,” Delaney said.
Quarterback Luke Kaiser and the offense didn’t find the end zone until their third drive of the day on Friday as the Lancers defeated the Hawks 49-7.
Play was suspended at halftime with Shawnee Mission East leading 21-7. The Lancers got a big touchdown run of more than 70 yards from Nigil Houston in the second quarter.
Kaiser, who ran for a touchdown on Thursday night, started the scoring on Friday with a 54-yard strike over the top to Sky Tate.
Senior Trevor Thompson on the next play picked off Olathe East’s Will Scofield and returned it for a pick-six.
“I saw where he was going,” Thompson said. “I was trying to make him throw it and I jumped right in front of the receiver at the last second.”
While Delaney said the offense was a bit sluggish and he takes some of the blame since he’s the play caller, he was extremely pleased with how the defense responded.
Olathe East had only one big play during the game and that came on Thursday night. The Lancers locked down the Hawks and made big hit after big hit.
“Yesterday was a weird day with the early start, stuff going on at school,” Delaney said. “We were kind of flat and that’s my fault. It’s my job to get our guys ready to play.”
SME will need to be ready to play from the start of the game as it heads to Lawrence for matchup with the Chesty Lions.
