SM north outlasts Leavenworth
By Alan Dale The Leavenworth Times Central might have grabbed the City crown back in late August at the City Jamboree, but Lafayette showed up when the results mattered. With the Irish’s 27-0 against Bishop LeBlond on Friday night at Eagle Stadium, the North Side squad Lightning took away some of the Leavenworth High School football momentum on Thursday, but the cool of Friday’s temperatures didn’t decrease the Pioneer heat. Unfortunately, despite a valiant effort by LVHS, the Pioneers couldn’t quite get over the hump and the Shawnee Mission North Indians held on for a 40-30 win Friday afternoon after the two teams had to come back following Thursday’s lightning delay at 4:08 of the second quarter. North (3-3) held a 20-15 lead when the delay was called. “We did more than battle, our kids played their tails off,” Leavenworth head coach Mark Littrell said. “Down the stretch it was just some mistakes that really got us. “Down the stretch we scored, recovered the onside kick...we played our tails off. I was proud of the kids, their effort and their intensity.” Yet, any worries if the stoppage would slow down the Pioneers (1-5) were put to rest, when LVHS took the lead in the second half, before the Indians rallied.
