SJ Lafayette blanks SJ LeBlond
By Randy Speer The St. Joseph News-Press Central might have grabbed the City crown back in late August at the City Jamboree, but Lafayette showed up when the results mattered. With the Irish’s 27-0 against Bishop LeBlond on Friday night at Eagle Stadium, the North Side squad notched a clean sweep of its inter-city competition. Lafayette (6-2, 4-2 MEC) notched wins over Central (18-12 in double overtime) on Aug. 26 and Benton (40-34) on Sept. 2. The Irish got the scoring started behind the legs of quarterback Diego Bernard, who followed a wall of blockers on fourth-and-goal from the 2-yard line to go up 7-0. Bernard’s arm brought Lafeyette its next score, a 9-yard touchdown pass to David Green, to give the Irish a 14-0. “Their plan was to plug the middle, plug the outside a little bit, so we had to take what they gave us,” Hardy said. Marcain Kimbrough-Ballard got into the scoring act for Lafayette, returning a punt 70 yards for the touchdown and a 20-0 lead. “We’ve been looking for a special team spark and that was probably the one we needed right now,” Hardy said. LeBlond (3-4, 1-5 MEC) had a chance to break the shutout with 27.2 seconds left in the second quarter. Mark Modlin brought down the elusive Bernard for a 15-yard sack setting up the Eagles' offense on their own 45-yard line. Twenty-four seconds later, the Eagles were looking at the best scoring chance they had – first-and-goal from the 5 with 3 seconds left. For the rest of the story click here.
