One of the great events of the summer season is the annual King of the Trenches Lineman Challenge held at Blue Valley High School.

It is a great night of competition for linemen on both sides of the ball to show their athleticism and competitive natures. Almost 100 athletes from more than 10 schools competed in the event.

Blue Valley won the team event with 851 points while Mill Valley senior Blaine Boudreaux won the individual competition with a score of 194.

Boudreaux said it was fun to have a competition that was just for the lineman.

“It was actually really fun,” Boudreaux said. “It gives a chance for the linemen to show out and do something else besides just taking a block.”

Right behind Boudreaux was Wyatt Huber from Shawnee Heights. He finished second with 193, Piper’s Brendan Smith was third with 181, Blue Valley’s Dawson Krug was fourth with 180 and Bonner Springs’ Sean Singleton and Blue Valley North’s Brian Nam tied for fifth with 179.

Blue Valley has won this competition quite a few times and head coach Eric Driskell said it is always a great event.

“It was an awesome turnout,” Driskell said. “We had just shy of 100 kids and they came out and competed. Us big guys don’t always do well in the heat. The kids did a great job of competing. It was nice to see some new teams like from Topeka and from the other side of the state line.

“We do some the other things. But it is good to see the big guys have a chance to compete.”

Finishing second behind Blue Valley was Blue Valley North with 844, Mill Valley finished third with 819, Piper finished fourth with 802 and Bonner Springs rounded out the top five with 799.
