Kearney rolls past Savannah

Savannah awoke a slumbering giant during Friday's Class 4 District 8 semifinal contest at Kearney High School.
The Savages struck early, but couldn't maintain momentum in a 42-6 loss to Kearney, the No. 4-ranked team in the state.
Junior quarterback Blake McGinness, on Savannah's first play from scrimmage, rumbled for 38 yard. That set up Taylor Gilbert 18-yard rush for a touchdown to put the Savages ahead 6-0.
The lead lasted less than a minute.
Kearney's Aaron Mello hauled in an 81-yard sideline pass from Logan Hinck to put the Bulldogs ahead 7-6, and the onslaught continued in the form of 35 additional unanswered points in the road loss for Savannah.
The Bulldogs (10-1) scored three times during the final 6:12 of the second quarter to take a 28-6 advantage into the locker room at the half.
“We had a lot of missed tackles and they were executing and getting up on our linebackers,” Savannah coach Chad Smith said. “Hats off to them, they are good at staying on their blocks.”
