East Buch, Maryville, Cameron grab wins
By The St. Joseph News-Press Staff
East Buchanan 52, Maysville 8
The No. 2-ranked team in Class 2 put some big numbers on the board in its season opener.
East Buchanan quarterback Colby Rapp passed for a pair of touchdowns to Garrett Brendle and ran for a 3-yard score in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs tallied 36 points in the first half, including two rushing TDs from Austin Potter — from 34 and 42 yards out. Potter finished with 112 yards on the ground, while Rapp passed for 247 yards.
Defensive back Zac Johnson added a 95-yard interception return for East Buchanan.
Troy Powers scored the lone TD for Maysville (0-1). Robert Graves ran for 130 yards for the Wolverines.
Maryville 39, Lawson 0
After a close first half, Maryville rattled off 33 points in the second half to defeat Lawson at home.
The No. 3-ranked team in Class 3, Maryville held a slim 6-0 lead after Elijah Green’s 3-yard run in the first quarter.
The Spoofhounds then started to pull away. A safety to open the third quarter was followed by a field goal by Jacob Reuter and a 9-yard TD run.
Green added a second score in the fourth quarter. Dakota Beemer, Maryville’s leading rusher with 120 yards, returned a punt 50 yards for a score.
Cameron 20, Plattsburg 18
Logan Cantwell scored three times to help Cameron snap an 11-game losing streak.
Cantwell ran for a pair of first-half scores — from 3 and 2 yards out — that gave the Dragons a 14-6 lead at the break.
Cantwell’s 40 yard kickoff return for a score provided the final margin in the victory.
Plattsburg (0-1) had three scores from three different players in the loss.
Tanner Bahora and Matthew Graham ran for scores and Tanner Sims caught a touchdown pass from Daniel O’Connor. A two-point conversion by the Tigers was good but a penalty negated it. A second chance failed.
O’Connor passed for 223 yards in the loss.
Worth County 54, Rock Port 8
Isaac Alarcon ran for five touchdowns to help Worth County post an emphatic Highway 275 Conference victory.
Alarcon ran for scores of 14, 3, 7, 5 and 12 yards spread between the three quarters of play. The leading rusher for the Tigers (1-0, 1-0) was Brevyn Ross, who racked up 174 yards on 18 carries.
Quarterback Ben Badell added a pair of touchdown runs in the third quarter to seal the victory.
Rock Port fell behind 12-0, but pulled within four after a Colby Linthicum touchdown run and conversion run.
North Platte 2, Gallatin 0
Josh Rodriguez’s debut as North Platte’s coach turned out to be a successful one.
A safety in the second quarter became the only points on the board. A bad snap to Gallatin quarterback Wyatt Bird turned into the only points of the game.
North Platte (1-0) then made a late stand on defense to keep the Bulldogs (0-1) off the board with less than 2 minutes to play deep inside North Platte territory.
Gallatin had an interception return come one yard shy of a touchdown on the final play of the first half, but North Platte wide receiver Kyle Ewing made what turned out to be a game-winning tackle.
