Jones happy with his home at Blue Valley North
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor Blue Valley North coach Jason Jones really likes coaching in the Midwest. The Indianola, Iowa native has spent time coaching in Arizona but when the chance to get back to the Midwest came up a few years ago he was excited to make the move. Jones has coached at Grandview in Missouri and has been at Blue Valley North for the last six years. His Mustangs opened the season with a big 17-14 over rival Blue Valley Northwest and things are looking up for Jones and the Mustangs. Jones said he is very happy he has found a home at Blue Valley North. “I like it here, we’ve got great parental support,” Jones said. “We’ve got great kids. It’s a lot of fun. We come out and get to practice in some of the greatest facilities in the Metro here in the Blue Valley School District. It’s always fun to be here. “I know it (coaching football) is a part of my job, but it’s a big part.” This year’s Mustangs are off to a good start and Jones knows the key to success this season will be finding that consistency from week to week. “We can’t have second and 10,” Jones said. “I know every coach says that but we’ve got to have positive plays on first down so we are not in third and longs. Defensively we’ve got to have their big plays be big plays not touchdowns. Last year we had some pretty good defensive games, but we also had games where we gave up big chunks of yardage.” This year’s squad got the big win against Northwest and this week stares down Gardner-Edgerton and its all-everything quarterback Bubba Starling. Blue Valley West was the Trailblazers first victim in the Eastern Kansas League and now the Mustangs are next up on the docket. Jones likes the way his team has prepared this offseason and thinks that will help them during the season. “We’ve got a great group of seniors this year,” Jones said. “A small group of about 21 that’s been very solid. They’ve been successful as freshmen and sophomores so they are looking to do good things.” ![]()
