With one minute, 41 seconds remaining on the clock in the fourth quarter, Lawrence defender Dearion Cooper broke up an Olathe Northwest pass on fourth down giving the Lions back the ball and preserving a 20-17 victory to open up district play.

“That was a big stop,” said Dirk Wedd. “It allowed us to get the ball and the win.”

Lawrence was paced by bruising tailback JD Woods who punished any Northwest defender who stood in his way. Woods carried for 294 yards with three touchdowns on the night, making it look easy at times.

“He was big tonight,” said Wedd. “He carried us but our offensive line performed great too.”

The Ravens opened the night with an impressive drive, however Lawrence was able to muster a stop on third down in the red-zone forcing a Northwest field goal putting the Ravens ahead 3-0 with 2:45 left in the first quarter.

Lawrence would quickly respond, after a 20 yard pass from Alan Clothier to Price Morgan, JD Woods took a carry 48-yards for a Lion touchdown putting them ahead 6-3.

Northwest would punt on their next drive but the Ravens would gain some momentum on special teams. After their defense forced Lawrence to punt, Raven defender Mitch Holsinger was able to get a hand on the Lion punt giving the Ravens the ball at the Lion 13-yard line.

The Lions would end all momentum the Ravens had gained as corner Luke Zenger knocked away a halfback pass on fourth down.

Lawrence would fumble on their ensuing drive and Northwest would finally make the Lions pay for a mistake. Dominique Bruce ran for a 10-yard touchdown giving the Ravens a 10-6 lead with 7:21 to play before half.

Mistakes seemed to plague the Lions in the first half. After a 63-yard run by JD Woods, the Lions missed a field goal keeping points off the scoreboard and giving Northwest a 10-6 lead into halftime.

Whatever coach Wedd’s halftime speech was, it worked! JD Woods took the first play of the second half up the middle for a 85-yard touchdown putting Lawrence back in front 13-10.

Northwest would respond with a beautiful 14 play, 69-yard drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown scramble by Jack Hatzfeld putting the Ravens ahead 17-13 with 5:58 left in the third.

Lawrence would take over for good with 5:11 left in the third as JD Woods did what he does best, run the football. Woods took a carry 76-yards for the score giving the Lions a final lead of 20-17 over the Ravens.

With the victory Lawrence (4-3) is now 1-0 in district play and will face Olathe North (7-0) next week.

The Ravens fall to (4-3) and will take on Olathe East (3-4).
