Leavenworth beats Schlagle to open districts
By Sam Sherman The Leavenworth Times
The Leavenworth High School Pioneers filed behind a stiff defensive effort and bruising ground game en route to their first district victory of the season, a 29-8 victory over F.L. Schlagle High School.
Starting 1-0 and slated to face a Washington team that fell 45-30 to Lansing High School Friday night, the Pioneers are in good shape.
The Pioneers filed behind the running of senior Sanchez Williams, who opened up Leavenworth's scoring with a six yard run at the beginning of the second quarter before finding the endzone again in the second with a four yard run scamper.
Williams ended his day with 134 yards on 20 carries, a 6.7 yards per carry average.
Senior wide receiver and defensive back Isaiah Ross also proved to be a spark, picking off a Schlagle pass and taking it to the house for six to put the Pioneers up 14-0 during the second quarter. Ross ended the day with three interceptions.
In the fourth quarter, Ross caught a 27 yard pass from senior quarterback Landry Hodges to seal the victory for the Pioneers.
Ross had three catches for 74 yards, along with 38 yards rushing. Hodges ended the day with 78 yards passing.
The Pioneer defense held Schlagle to 182 yards of total offense, allowing 156 yards through the air, but only 26 on the ground.
