Winnetonka wins shootout with Ray South

It was Senior night in the Northland, as the Winnetonka Griffins hosted the Raytown South Cardinals. In an offensive slugfest the Griffins outlasted the Cardinals 44-37.
The two schools looked evenly matched as they both came into the game with identical 5-2 records.
The Griffins got on the board first when Marquise Doherty went 31-yards for the score. Jesse Jasso converted the kick.
The Cardinals answered right away when quarterback Jabril Cox showed great speed keeping the ball and going 50-yards for the score. Kamal Battle missed the kick but a roughing the kicker gave the Cardinals another chance and Cox ran in the two-point conversion. This gave the Cardinals an 8-7 lead.
The Griffins scored just over a minute later as Chase Williams scored on a 27-yard run. Julious Sabastiano found Will Morrow for the two-point conversion.
Cox rolled out and threw a 16-yard laser to Alahandro Garrett in the middle of the end zone. Battle made the kick and the score 15-13 Cardinals.
‘Tonka answered two play later when Sabasiano threw an 81-yard bomb to Djimon Colbert. Doherty took a direct snap and ran in the two-point conversion. The Griffins took the lead, 21-15.
The Cardinals went back to the their ground game as Reisjon Larimore scored from 15-yards out. Battle missed the kick and Ray South was up 22-21.
At 4:50 of the second quarter with South having the ball on their own 6-yard line, Cox dropped back to pass, and was sacked in his own end zone by Mingus Craddock and Jacob Walker. The safety put the Griffins ahead at the half 23-22.
Doherty tunneled his way into the end zone for his second touchdown of the game. Jasso’s kick was good and ‘Tonka was ahead 30-22.
Cox led the Cardinals down the field and kept the ball and scored on a 5-yard run. The Cardinals lined up for a two-point conversion, but a false start penalty moved them back five yards. Unflappable Cox found Dominic Herndon in the corner of the end zone, and the score was tied at 30.
Late in the third quarter Sabastiano scored on a 1-yard run. Jasso was true with kick, and the Griffons were up 37-30.
Cox answered again, this time he hit Isaiah Hutchinson on a 13-yard score. After Battle’s kick was true and the score was tied again at 37.
Again the quick strike, just over a minute later Chase Williams ran 53-yards for the score. Jasso converted for the last points of the game.
The Cardinals were driving, when Marquise Doherty caused a fumble and the Griffons recovered. Griffins coach Sterling Edwards talked about the play, “Marquise was lining the ball carrier up for the strip. It’s just an example of a kid making a great play.
The Winnetonka Griffins final game of the regular season will be on the road as they travel to Belton to take on the Pirates. Ray South concludes their regular season at home as they welcome the Platte County Pirates.
