St. Joseph Lafayette tops Chillicothe

Lafayette got off to a fast start at Alumni Stadium on Friday night and refused to give Chillicothe a chance to get back into the game.
Senior wide reciever Chester Goudeau took the opening kickoff to the house to give his team an early lead and the Fighting Irish rolled from there in a 37-13 victory in Midland Empire Conference play.
“It was huge to (get off to a good start),” said Lafayette quarterback Drew Cortez, who threw for 184 yard and three touchdowns. “We started off fast and got some momentum going and built off that for the rest of the game.”
Chillicothe was forced to punt after three offensive plays in the first quarter. Those three plays would prove to be the only time the Hornets offense would possess the ball in the opening 12 minutes.
After Lafayette took over on the three and out, senior signal-caller Cortez rolled to his right and hurled a 36-yard strike to his favorite target, Preston Martin. After a failed extra-point attempt, the score stood at 12-0.
Lafayette (4-2, 3-1 MEC) then executed a pooch kick over the first line of Chillicothe special-teamers. The Irish swarmed the ball before the Hornets could reach it, and Cortez and the offense were in business again.
