Platte County grabs big win over Winnetonka
By Scott Kendall PrepsKC staff writer
It was all Winnetonka to start off the game. On the first drive of the game, the Griffins marched down the field and scored on pass play between Julious Sabastiano and James Gillock for 24-yards.
Winnetonka forced Platte County to punt on their possession and the Griffins took over on their own 22-yard line for the 2nd possession of the game. Winnetonka proceeded with a 11-play and 5:30 drive that resulted in a 10-yard TD run for Sabastiano, they went for the 2-point conversion and failed, but they led the game 12-0 with 3:44 left in the first quarter.
The Pirates were able to get the ball back again with 1:10 left in the 1st quarter on their own 7-yard line. With 3rd and 16 on their own 37-yard line, Mitchell and Guillory connected yet again on a 21-yard strike and a Pirates first down. Michael McNair carried the ball two times in a row for a gain of 10 yards and 11 yards before Mitchell hooks up with Aliek Reed for a 29-yard TD catch, with the extra point, the lead was now with the Pirates, 14-12.
Platte County started with the ball in the 2nd half. The Pirates were driving yet again, on 3rd and long, Mitchell was flushed from the pocket and found and McNair on the side line for 13 yards and extended the drive. The Pirates were faced with another 3rd and long, but this time Mitchell was picked off by Tyrique Bennett of the Griffins. Griffins’ quarterback Sabastiano looks for his open receiver but fails to see senior Tyler Cooper and Cooper picks off the pass and runs in 31 yards for the TD. With the extra point, the lead was pushed out to 16-points, 28-12.
Starting on Winnetonka’s own 20-yard line, the Griffins ran two plays that put then on Platte County’s side of the field. This was the first time since the 2nd quarter. With the clock down under 0:30 left in the 3rd quarter, Griffins quarterback Sabastiano fumbled the ball on Platte County’s 24-yard line. Platte County could not capitalize on the turnover and the Griffins were given the ball back. Sabastiano was sacked for the 2nd time in the game on Tonka’s next possession and were forced to another 3-and-out. When you thought that Winnetonka was getting back in the game, that’s when the Pirates defense stepped up and the offense tacks on another TD. This time Mitchell and Guillory hook up with a 73-yard TD reception, their 2nd time on the game. With 8:48 left in the game, the Pirates lead was 35-12. Platte County scored 35 un-answered points.
