It was all Winnetonka to start off the game. On the first drive of the game, the Griffins marched down the field and scored on pass play between Julious Sabastiano and James Gillock for 24-yards.

Winnetonka forced Platte County to punt on their possession and the Griffins took over on their own 22-yard line for the 2nd possession of the game. Winnetonka proceeded with a 11-play and 5:30 drive that resulted in a 10-yard TD run for Sabastiano, they went for the 2-point conversion and failed, but they led the game 12-0 with 3:44 left in the first quarter.

Platte County needed to get back in the game and they did so in a big way. On the 2nd play of the Pirates drive, sophomore quarterback Justin Mitchell completed a pass to fellow sophomore receiver TJ Guillory on an 83-yard TD catch and run. The pass tipped through the finger tips of the Griffins secondary and Guillory was waiting for the ball and took it the distance for Platte County’s first score of the night. This cut the lead to just five points.

The Pirates were able to get the ball back again with 1:10 left in the 1st quarter on their own 7-yard line. With 3rd and 16 on their own 37-yard line, Mitchell and Guillory connected yet again on a 21-yard strike and a Pirates first down. Michael McNair carried the ball two times in a row for a gain of 10 yards and 11 yards before Mitchell hooks up with Aliek Reed for a 29-yard TD catch, with the extra point, the lead was now with the Pirates, 14-12.

Winnetonka was bound and determined to turn the game around on their next drive. The Griffins were driving and looking to score. They had the ball on the 1-yard line and looked like they would be taking the lead back from the Pirates, when something bazaar happened. With the running back in motion, he bumped into the quarterback and the ball pops up in the air. Tyler Clemens of Platte County grabs the ball out of the air and sprints towards the end zone, a 99 yard return. The Pirates took a demanding lead, 21-12 into the half.

Platte County started with the ball in the 2nd half. The Pirates were driving yet again, on 3rd and long, Mitchell was flushed from the pocket and found and McNair on the side line for 13 yards and extended the drive. The Pirates were faced with another 3rd and long, but this time Mitchell was picked off by Tyrique Bennett of the Griffins. Griffins’ quarterback Sabastiano looks for his open receiver but fails to see senior Tyler Cooper and Cooper picks off the pass and runs in 31 yards for the TD. With the extra point, the lead was pushed out to 16-points, 28-12.

On Winnetonka ensuing possession, they were forced a 3-in-out. The punt was partially blocked by the Pirates and the ball went out of bounds giving the ball back to Platte County on Winnetonka’s own 45-yard line. 2nd and 10, Winnetonka committed a costly 15-yard pass interference penalty and moved the Pirates to the 30-yard line.  The Pirates had the ball on the 16-yard line and quarterback Mitchell threw a fade route to the left corner of the end zone, but the ball was under thrown and Chase Williams of Winnetonka picks off the would be pass for the touch back and holds the Pirates to zero points on the possession.

Starting on Winnetonka’s own 20-yard line, the Griffins ran two plays that put then on Platte County’s side of the field. This was the first time since the 2nd quarter. With the clock down under 0:30 left in the 3rd quarter, Griffins quarterback Sabastiano fumbled the ball on Platte County’s 24-yard line. Platte County could not capitalize on the turnover and the Griffins were given the ball back. Sabastiano was sacked for the 2nd time in the game on Tonka’s next possession and were forced to another 3-and-out. When you thought that Winnetonka was getting back in the game, that’s when the Pirates defense stepped up and the offense tacks on another TD. This time Mitchell and Guillory hook up with a 73-yard TD reception, their 2nd time on the game. With 8:48 left in the game, the Pirates lead was 35-12. Platte County scored 35 un-answered points.

Winnetonka was not done though. They still had some fight left in them. Sabastiano took the team on his shoulders and scored on a 1-yard TD run. The extra-point had the Griffins within 16 points. With 5:33 left in the game, the Griffins needed the ball back and what better way to do then to recover the on-side kick, which is exactly what the Griffins did. But, the Pirates defense stepped up once again and stalls the Griffins offense. The Pirates kneel down and take the victory 35-19.

Winnetonka’s quarterback Sabastiano led his team with 168 yards passing and 159 rushing yards for 3 combined TDs. James Gillock had 4 receptions for 51 yards and a TD. Justin Mitchell of Platte County had a 300-yard passing day for 3 TD’s, two of which went to TJ Guillory who had 7 receptions for 197 yards (28.1 Yards per catch). The other TD went to wide receiver Aliek Reed who had 3 catches for 74 yards. The two other TDs came on defense, one from Tyler Clemens on the 99 yard fumble recovery and Tyler Coopers interception.

Winnetonka will host Kearney and Platte County will be at Belton.
