Benton came close to ending its lengthy losing streak Friday night in south Kansas City, but an ill-timed fumble provided an opponent another escape route.

A bobbled snap in the fourth quarter broke a 14-all tie when Harrisonville scored on a 3-yard return touchdown.

Prior to the late shortcoming, the Cardinals forged the tie on a 27-yard connection from Dominic Hill to Devon Burton in the third quarter.

Hill ran in for a 9-yard touchdown in the second quarter, and Benton played nearly even with the host throughout the game’s remainder.

In a battle of 2013 Show-Me Bowl entrants at their respective classes, the Spoofhounds continued their dominance.

The two-time reigning Class 3 state champions crushed the Cardinals, last year’s Class 2 runners-up, on Friday night in Lawson, Mo.

Now on a 31-game winning streak, Maryville scored the first 26 points — three coming from senior running back Brody McMahon, who sauntered into the end zone from 4, 11 and 2 yards out.

McMahon rushed for 190 yards on 20 carries, and Dakota Beemer was nearly as productive with 185 on 16 for two scores in the Spoofhounds’ prodigious wing-T set.

Both Jacob Cacek and Chip Dunlap intercepted Lawson quarterbacks Cody Glenn and Colton Williams. Glenn threw for 227 yards and two scores — to Damien Sapp and Preston Smidt — but they did little to scare the Spoofhounds.
