After a slow start to the season, the Indians are heading into the Class 5 District 8 district tournament on the heels of a three-game win streak.

Central (5-4, 4-1 Suburban League Red Division) pounded Ruskin thanks in large part to senior running back Derek Gray’s 219-yard, four-touchdown night.

One of Gray’s TDs came on a 38-yard punt return in the Indians’ 21-point first quarter. Tyree Mayfield added a 38-yard second-stanza TD from Jacob Kaiser.

Central, which finished second in the conference to Class 5 No. 1-ranked Lee’s Summit West, beat Park Hill, Park Hill South and Ruskin by double digits and likely earns a home playoff game next week.

Lathrop 40, Mid-Buchanan 15

The Mules seized an opportunity to claim a share of the KCI championship Friday night in Faucett, Mo., with a convincing win over Mid-Buchanan (5-4, 3-4 KCI)

A scoreless first quarter gave way to a regular-season-ending statement from Lathrop (8-1, 6-1 KCI Conference), which claimed a piece of the league crown for the first time since the 1990s.

Lathrop shares the title with Lawson, which beat the Mules earlier this year and also finished 6-1 in the KCI — the News-Press did not know the league’s tiebreaking procedure if one exists.
