Van Horn enters the final football game of the regular season under a full head of steam and with a 7-1 record.
Sylvester Newman and Marquis Bever returned the opening two kickoffs 85 and 60 yards for touchdowns, igniting a 36-point first quarter and a 49-0 drubbing of Kansas City Central Friday night at Truman High School.
“I was proud of how they bounced back after a tough (first) loss last week (28-0 defeat to Hogan Prep),” Van Horn coach Jeff Tolbert said. “We started substituting in the second quarter.”
Newman scored two touchdowns to lead a balanced Van Horn attack.
The Falcons led 36-0 at halftime and added two more touchdowns in the second half.
It was the first time the former Interscholastic League rivals had played since 2007, when Van Horn prevailed 7-0.
Van Horn concludes the regular season next Thursday night at Truman against a 3-6 Raytown team, which defeated Belton 45-21 Friday night.
