Chiefs announce 6th Coach of the Week awards
By PrepsKC staff
The Kansas City Chiefs have announced this week’s Coach of the Week honors. The sixth awards of the season go to Lee’s Summit West’s Royce Boehm and Washington’s Bryan Salsgiver.
As a result of this honor, both schools will receive a $500 grant. Additionally, Boehm and Salsgiver will be presented with congratulatory footballs autographed by Chiefs Head Coach Andy Reid, a special-edition Coach of the Week hat and a certificate recognizing their selection. Each coach is now a finalist for their state’s Chiefs Coach of the Year Award. The Coach of the Year award will be selected via voting on kcchiefs.com at the end of the regular season.
The 2013 High School Coach of the Week program is a joint initiative of the Kansas City Chiefs and the National Football League. This program is designed to recognize and reward Kansas City area high school coaches for superior performance on a weekly basis. The Chiefs Coach of the Week program is intended to honor individuals who are shaping today’s youth and tomorrow’s leaders.
Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame linebacker and current Director of Special Events Gary Spani will be on hand to present the coaches their respective awards.
West defeated Raymore-Peculiar 49-13 to earn the 100th win in program history. The school has been open for just 10 years and Boehm has been the coach the entire time. Currently the Titans are 6-1 and are the No. 1 ranked team in Missouri Class 5.
Boehm said it was a great honor to be recognized by the Chiefs.
“It is a recognition of the program and the school and the players that are playing in the program right now,” Boehm said. “What an honor that these young men get to experience with Gary Spani coming out.”
Washington defeated rival Wyandotte 36-35 in a wild back and forth game. The victory moved the Wildcats to 4-2 on the season and assured them a share of the Kansas City Kansas Atchison League title.
Salsgiver said winning the award from the Chiefs is an honor for the program and it is even more special for him as a Chiefs fan.
“It’s really special,” Salsgiver said. “I’m just a giant Chiefs fan and season ticket holder for many years. I was out there Sunday helping set that record. To be honored by your favorite team of all time is a great honor by itself but it’s a great reflection on our boys. I can’t take too much credit for all this. I have a great staff and the boys in year two for me have really bought in to what we’ve been doing since the summer.
“It’s a complete buy in and turnaround from those kids and it’s really a tribute to them and the hard work they are putting in.”
