Ron Musser walked onto the field Friday night to face a team that he had never faced before.

The Mid-Buchanan coach had plenty of familiarity, though. Musser retired from East Buchanan following the 2006 season before the Dragons lured the longtime coach out of retirement prior to this year.

Current Bulldogs coach Kevin Bryan coached under Musser during his tenure in Gower and faced his former partner for the first time. The faceoff between teams coached by once colleagues fueled a rivalry that had lost its competitive luster in recent years but East Buchanan made sure that it ended with it on top.

The Bulldogs struggled to pull away for the first three quarters until their offense came alive in the final stanza, scoring four touchdowns in the last 12 minutes to blow away Mid-Buchanan 46-18 at Mid-Buchanan High School.

“You know, I’ve been gone from (East Buchanan) long enough that I don’t know as many of the kids as I did before,” Musser said. “I’ve been gone long enough that some of that attachment isn’t there like it would have been if I had only been gone a year or two.”

Musser’s new team looked to be on track to pull off an upset of Class 1 No. 10-ranked East Buchanan, but fatigue and mistakes piled up in the final quarter.
