Van Horn, St. Joe Central, Oak Grove roll
By The Examiner staff
There’s no stopping the Van Horn football team.
The Falcons remained undefeated in five games by routing African Centered Education College Prep 49-6 Friday night at Truman High School. The start is the best since the 1994 team won its opening nine games before losing in district play.
J.J. Rivers rushed for 191 yards on 22 carries and scored three touchdowns, including runs of 45 and 35, Christian Carr rushed for two more and quarterback Tony Winningham rushed for one and passed for another.
ACE broke to an early 6-0 lead, but Van Horn regrouped to lead 21-6 at halftime and broke open the game over the final two quarters.
“We were listless,” Van Horn coach Jeff Tolbert said of the start. “We weren’t sharp in our warmups. I felt like we weren’t ready to play, and I’ll take responsibility for that. We played well defensively at times.”
Van Horn has its homecoming game next Saturday against Summit Christian Academy. A victory clinches an undisputed Crossroads Conference title.
ST. JOSEPH CENTRAL 58, TRUMAN 6: Sophomore Jordan Salima turned out to be a bright spot for Truman in a tough Suburban Middle Seven defeat at St. Joseph Central.
The Patriots fell to 0-5 and 0-3 heading into next Friday’s game against an 0-5 Ruskin team.
Salima scored on a 2-yard touchdown in the third quarter for Truman’s only score. Salima finished with 101 yards rushing on 18 carries.
“Throwing him (Salima) out there in that mix, where, two weeks ago he didn’t get two carries probably, he’s shown us that he has some elusiveness and carries the ball OK,” Truman coach Gregg Webb said.
OAK GROVE 61, ODESSA 0: Oak Grove rolled to a 54-0 halftime lead and went on to rout Odessa and remain undefeated in five games and successfully open Missouri River Valley Conference West play.
The stage is set for next Friday’s game at undefeated Pleasant Hill. The Roosters also improved to 5-0 with a 52-21 trouncing of Grain Valley Friday night.
Aaron Graham had 16- and 38-yard rushing touchdowns and returned a punt 78 yards for another. Tyler Brown scored on runs of 1 and 15 yards, Ethan Fugitt on runs of 10 and 72 yards and Alan Lehane on runs 55 and 60 yards. Scott Jones kicked seven extra points.
