Leavenworth runs past SM North
By Jason Strckland
After a 34-0 loss to start the season, the Leavenworth Pioneers responded with a 33-0 win over Shawnee Mission North on Thursday at Pioneer Stadium.
The defense was able to penetrate the line of scrimmage most of the night and stopped the Indians' momentum when they started moving the ball.
The Pioneers forced eight punts by the Indians.
But the play of the night was on Leavenworth's second drive of the second half when junior quarterback Landry Hodges scrambled out of trouble and found senior running back Jason Randall on the left side.
Randall cut all the way across the field and out-ran the Indian defense down the sideline for a 59-yard touchdown to make it 20-0 in the third quarter.
“He's such a great kid number one,” head coach Mark Littrell said about Randall after the game. “Besides just football ability and his athletic ability, he's a great person and you want great things for great people.”
Randall had his fair share of blocks when Hodges would take off on a designed run.
“He's an unselfish player,” Littrell said. “He's what you want. We run that quarterback outside zone play and he's out there blocking for him and that's a sign of a good football player.”
Randall ran the ball 18 times for 149 yards to go along with his 59-yard touchdown catch.
Hodges created four of the five Pioneer touchdowns with two touchdown passes and two runs in the end zone.
He went 14-for-19 with 177 yards and the two touchdowns.
