It was a season of growth for Bonner Springs in 2012. The Braves moved from Class 5A to 4A and played some of its best football in recent years even if the record didn’t show it.

The move in class size saw Bonner Springs play some new opponents in DeSoto, St. James Academy and Spring Hill and see a different brand of football. After playing its regular season against the always strong Kaw Valley League the Braves then saw the new teams in its district from the Frontier League which has produced a state champ and two state finalists in the last three seasons.

The Braves began the year on a 3-0 streak with impressive victories over Turner and Lansing. Aslin said the win over Lansing early in the season and the improvement of his defense as the season progressed was key for his program.

“Highlights of our season were starting off the year 3-0 and beating Lansing on the road very handily in game No. 2,” Aslin said. “We improved on team defense a great deal throughout the season. Our defense played great team football all year, but especially came together at the end of the season.”

The three wins to start the season would be all the Braves would get but they would be in almost every game down the stretch. When districts began Bonner Springs lost a tough game to DeSoto 16-6 and followed that with a 17-16 overtime loss to St. James. That loss eliminated the Braves from the postseason but it came down to the final play much like a 29-23 loss to Piper in week No. 4.

This offseason Aslin said his team is working hard to take the next step this fall.

“Our team needs to improve at all aspects of football,” Aslin said. “Especially being more physical and playing better as a unit. Our off season is going great.   We are getting bigger and stronger in the weight room and have more student athletes coming out for football next year.  Our numbers are growing larger at the middle school level which will be great for us down the line.”
