The William Chrisman football team gave defending state Class 5 champion Staley a battle for one half.

Then came the second half. The Falcons erupted for five third-quarter touchdowns and went on to a 56-28 victory over the Bears in the Suburban Middle Seven opener Friday night at Independence All-School Stadium/Norm James Field.

The Bears fell to 0-3 with their 15th consecutive loss.

The Staley defense held the Bears to 70 yards rushing on 32 attempts. Junior quarterback Dylan Cole completed 9 of 16 passes for 136 yards and one touchdown to lead the Bears.

Alex Ball hauled in a 21-yard pass from Cole for Chrisman’s first touchdown. Cole passed 32 yards to DeJay and 5 yards to Brett Wolf for the other first-half Chrisman touchdowns. Gannon Ogle plunged 1 yard for the Bears’ final score in the fourth quarter. Ben Gilliland kicked four extra points for the Bears, who play at Raytown next week.
