Kansas gets going as practice opens

Practice in Kansas is now open and dozens of teams from around the Metro took advantage of Monday’s cool temperatures to kick off their seasons.
One team who starts practice with high expectations for this year is Bishop Miege. The Stags have a new coach in Jon Holmes and a desire to take the next step after last year’s run to the Kansas Class 5A quarterfinals.
Miege only lost two games last season by a combined six points. Both losses were to Blue Valley by the same 24-21 score with the last defeat coming in the quarterfinals. The Stags came about a half yard short on a fourth down play in the final minutes of the game that would have given them a chance to tie or win the game.
That one yard is a theme that the players and coaches are using to stay motivated in 2012.
“We are pretty excited to come back this year,” the Stags standout senior quarterback Montell Cozart said. “We have pretty high hopes for this year. Just to be out here with these guys and the coaching staff it’s good because we have been grinding all summer. It’s finally good to actually play football, put on some pads later this week and actually get back into the swing of things.”
For Holmes having an experienced quarterback like Cozart should help ease the transition as a first year head coach. Holmes was the offensive coordinator for the Stags under former coach Tim Grunhard who left to become a member of Charlie Weiss’ staff at the University of Kansas.
Holmes said the team has had good workouts this summer and the numbers are up as they opened practice Monday.
“It feels great, it’s been a long time coming,” Holmes said. “It feels good to get out here and get ready to start our real practice.
“We had great numbers all summer. We were averaging 80 to 90 guys in the weight room. Then we came back and did some stuff Monday and Thursday nights and the guys bought into a lot of the things we wanted to get done in the summer.”
Miege will open its season Aug. 31 at Blue Valley North.
