Bishop Miege promotes Holmes to top spot
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor Bishop Miege ended its search for a new head football coach by promoting from within. The Stags have hired Offensive Coordinator Jon Holmes to replace Tim Grunhard who left after the season to take an assistant coaching position at the University of Kansas.
Holmes has been an assistant at Miege for the last eight years severing as the OC the last five. The Stags have been one of the top offensive teams in the Metro the last few seasons including winning a Class 4A state title in 2009 and averaging more than 40 points a game the last two seasons.
Miege has become one of the top programs in the Metro and the opening drew a lot of interest. Stags’ Athletic Director Tim Kennedy said he was very happy Holmes would be taking the next step becoming the head coach.
“Football wise he has done a great job with the offense,” Kennedy said. “As a football coach there was absolutely nothing we could ask for more. As a person it is the same way. He’s been with the school; he’s been around the school. He played high school football here. He is loyal to the community and works tremendously with the kids. He has high expectations which I really like.
“I think he has learned a lot from every coach that he has coached with and that goes a long way.”
Holmes is a Miege graduate and played football for the Stags. He played college football at Fort Scott Community College and Missouri State before moving into coaching and teaching. Holmes will also be the assistant Athletic Director and be in charge of the weight programs at Miege.
