Turner coach Terrell steps down
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor With every offseason there is change and there will be change at Turner this fall. The Golden Bears Head Coach Allen Terrell has stepped down from his position to spend more time with his family.
Terrell resigned last week and said it was a tough decision after spending the last six years leading the Turner program.
“The kids made it such a hard decision,” Terrell said. “It’s always a hard decision for coaches to leave. You get a tight relationship with those guys and it was difficult to let them know last Friday.”
Terrell is a lifelong Kansas resident who went to Lansing high school before heading to Kansas State. As a teacher and a coach he began his career at DeSoto where he was an assistant for five years before coming to Turner.
In six years at Turner Terrell and his staff compiled a 31-28 record including three trips to the playoffs. This past season the Golden Bears finished with a 4-5 mark. Turner fell short of the postseason but it did earn impressive wins over playoff teams Piper and Bonner Springs during the regular season.
Terrell said he felt the Turner program was moving in the right direction and it was a good time for him to spend more time with his two children.
“I’ve got a son that’s a sixth grader and daughter that’s a third grader,” Terrell said. “He’s going to be playing middle school football next year and she’s deep into gymnastics and her girl’s stuff. I gave Turner six years and I’ve really taken some time away from Zack and Grace and I just needed to give some time back to them.”
