Blue Springs outlast Liberty earns Big 6 title

Kelly Donohoe was concerned about his team’s focus following last Friday’s huge district victory over arch-rival Blue Springs South.

When Tyler Ray picked off Liberty quarterback Lucas Norton’s pass on the first play from scrimmage Thursday night at William Jewell College – setting up Kyle Brown’s 6-yard touchdown run – the Blue Springs coach breathed a momentary sigh of relief.

“That was a great way to start the game,” Donohoe said after his team claimed 30-21 victory that clinched the Wildcats’ fourth consecutive Suburban Big Six Conference title at 5-0, secured a playoff berth (though not the district title) and gave them a 7-2 overall record and 2-0 district mark.

“But what happened after that wasn’t too pretty. We dropped four or five big passes, the offense was stale and the kids just weren’t fired up or ready. And I put that all on me.

“It’s the coach’s job to make sure the team is ready, and believe me, this team will be ready next Friday when we go to Columbia Rock Bridge.”

Ray agreed with his coach.

“We worked hard this week in practice, but you couldn’t tell it by the way we played tonight,” said Ray, who anchored a solid defensive performance. “Oh, we’re going to be ready for Rock Bridge.

“They beat Liberty and will see the score of this game and think they can beat us. And we have to do everything possible to keep that from happening.”
