SM West powers past Leavenworth
By Scott Lavelock The Leavenworth Times
Overland Park, Kan. — Leavenworth's Jason Randall led all rushers with 114 yards on 18 carries and Pioneer wide receiver Jeff George added a game-high five catches for 109 yards. But Shawnee Mission West quarterback Armani Williams accounted for four touchdowns - three passing and one rushing - to lead the Vikings to a 41-14 victory over Leavenworth at Shawnee Mission South High School Friday night.
“Offensively, it's probably a little bit better than we've been playing,” Pioneer head coach Kevin Kopecky said. “But I'm just disappointed overall. … I felt like our kids weren't really ready to play. … But hats off to Shawnee Mission West. They're a good football team.”
The Pioneers, 0-6, had the ball in Viking territory seven times, but couldn't break through until six minutes, 45 seconds remained in the game when Mark Dabeck - who didn't start at quarterback but came in late in the first quarter - heaved a perfectly-thrown fade route to George for a 27-yard touchdown. West, 3-3, led 41-7 at that point before Josh Ammel recovered a fumble, which set up an 11-yard touchdown run by Randle with 3:35 left that provided the final score.
Tilden Edwards recovered the ensuing onside kick, but Leavenworth couldn't score again and West was able to control things with their running game, which finished the night with 217 yards.
West moved the ball fairly consistently on the ground and scored that way on their first drive with 7:16 left in the first quarter. Tre Burt ran for 41 of the 51 yards on the drive and he capped it with an 8-yard scamper to make it 7-0.
