Every once in a while someone asks me what is the best conference in the Metro. Of all of the questions I get that one might just be the hardest.

One thing most Metro football fans know is we have a lot of talented players and coaches and we have the programs that can match any others from around Kansas and Missouri. All you have to do is watch the state championship games each season to see how strong football is in the Metro.

This past year we had five teams win titles from four different conferences. Of course Rockhurst isn’t in a conference but the Hawklets had regular season wins over every team in the Suburban Big Six except Lee’s Summit so you could say Rockhurst played in a conference last year.

If having a state champion would qualify a conference for the discussion then the EKL and Frontier League on the Kansas side are a part of the argument. On the Missouri side the Suburban Middle Six and Missouri River Valley Conference East each had champions. So those four conferences along with maybe the Suburban Big Six are part of the discussion if you have to have a state champ.

What about the conference that didn’t have a state champ but was a meat grinder then you could add the Sunflower League in Kansas and probably the Suburban Small Six, Midland Empire and even the I-70 on the Missouri side.

Those leagues each have strengths which brings up questions like is a league that has teams with similar records up and down the standings strong or mediocre? Is a conference that has one great team and other teams that beat up on each other not good?

This week PrepsKC will post a poll on our Facebook site asking what you think is the best conference in Kansas. Next week we will do the same in Missouri and once the results are in I will discuss each conference on their merits. Also I would love to hear your feedback on the subject.
