Although the GKCFCA has rarely, if ever, rescheduled a Wednesday clinic that had been postponed due to weather, that was what was done this month.

The original clinic day, the 21st of February, had to be canceled/postponed due to weather. That clinic presentation was going to feature Missouri Western’s new staff (including past GKCFCA president Paul Brown’s son, Dave, as the offensive coordinator). But, due to recruiting obligations, they were not able to come back the following week.

So, in a pinch, continuing the theme of board members/past president’s sons, the board reached out to two more sons now coaching at the college level, and they were gracious enough to put together quality, informative, entertaining presentations on such short notice.

Josh Littrell, first year head coach at Waldorf University, led his team to a 7-4 record, best at Waldorf in 20 years. And Nathan Roach, LB coach at Wartburg College, in his fifth year there, just finished their 24th winning season and 2nd D3 National Quarter Final appearance in four years. Both schools represented are in the northern regions of Iowa, and each had five plus hour road trips to make it down. It was a special night for the two dads, Mark Littrell, Leavenworth head coach, and myself, as introductions to peers and reminiscing of old KC days carried on long after the presentations.

While introducing our respective sons, we both expressed reservations about their sons stepping out into their chosen profession but conveyed their pride in the manner in which their sons have carried on the family tradition. For these two football families, it was a night that will not soon be forgotten.

Kyle Roach is the former Pleasant Hill Head coach and past president of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association.
