This stretch of football is always one of my favorite. Three frantic weeks of games all leading up to the crowning of state champions.

It’s more than just good games though, at this point you start to see some different opponents.

With a state the size of Missouri two consecutively numbered districts can have some distance between them. Look no further Platte County facing Moberly. From a Kansas City perspective you can also start to get a gauge of where teams are. In a year full of parity, it will be nice to see if the local squads are up or down compared to the rest of the Show-Me State.

The quarterfinal round is the first leg of this but it starts to get even more fun in the semifinal round. Teams start trekking three and four hours for what in many times is the biggest game in many years for a programs. It’s also in many cases the biggest games of these kids lives.

That leads to the second part of what makes this time of year so great, the legacies.

A team that makes it to the semifinals isn’t a team that’s going to be forgotten. That is doubly true for a team that hasn’t done it for decades.

Finally there’s the state title game. I remember when my alma mater made it back to the state title game after five failed trips to the semifinals. In some ways there’s a level of relief for so many teams to just have “made it” to state.

Take all these great weekends of football, mix in the start of college basketball and some turkey and I’ll be sad when it’s all over in a few weeks.
