As I enter the Missouri district standings every week it’s interesting to see how the numbers fluctuate. This early in the season you can see some wild swings. One week a team is in seventh the next week it is the top spot.

I remember when the Missouri points system began a few years back. I was against it. I wanted postseason qualification based on a head to head play your way in district. The four-team district system had shown its age and as long as districts were decided mostly by geography with the same teams playing each other year after year it was just unfair.

There needed to be a change and I like I said the points system wasn’t my first choice. I don’t even know if it was my second or third choice. As time has gone on I am reminded of the saying “Don’t let good be the enemy of perfect.”

With that in mind this system is better. How much better I don’t know but it is better and teams must win three games to claim a district title.

The one thing I miss is the excitement of winning a game to get a team in the playoffs. These days winning the last game of the regular season just determines where and who you will play in week 10. There is no more drama in the final few weeks of the season. I guess there is drama in week 11 or 12 but that drama was already there.

One thing the new system has done is make that magical 13-point barrier a part of all nine weeks instead of the last three. Getting a win by 13 points is the most you can count in the formula. So, to get the most possible points each week you need to win by 13.

That point is lost on most fans. Let’s just say two weeks ago when Blue Springs was trying to score up 10 with the ball inside the Lee’s Summit West 10-yard line with under a minute it wasn’t unsportsmanlike. It was how the game is played. The Wildcats ended up kicking a field goal in the final seconds to win by, you guessed it, 13.

I had heard there were some upset Titan fans. They thought the late field goal was unnecessary and just piling on. Well it wasn’t and if West was in the same position I assume their coaching staff would have done the exact same thing.

Bonus points are big and if you are a Class 6 team that can’t play up to gain bonus points the No. 13 is all you can do week in and week out to maximize you points and improve your seeding.

For every other team, you can always do what one Class 3 coach joked the first Saturday of the first season of the new points system. In an email, he told me that one of his assistant coaches figured out that if they scheduled nothing but very good Class 6 teams they wouldn’t have to win a game to end up with a top seed.

So, as you see there are many ways to maximize your points.
