It’s the holiday season and we’ve put the high school football season to bed, with the exception of a handful of all-whatever teams.

But now, the Christmas tree is up and now’s the time to put a few things on our high school football wish list.

First on the list is the addition of the EKL to the crossover series between Missouri and Kansas teams. Right now the Eastern Kansas League is playing as good of football as any conference in either state. So if I’m going to ask for something this Christmas, this is at the top of the list. If I’m going to be really greedy and they want to upgrade to a higher model let’s just start forgetting about conferences. How about Harrisonville up against Louisburg. And maybe Ottawa against Lawson.

Next on the list is a pair of rule changes. Much like in the NFL and NCAA, teams need to be able to return interceptions and fumbles on two-point conversions. It just makes sense. If you take the risk of going for the points, there should be the risk of giving up those points.

The other rule change is in regards to field goals. Currently if a ball ends up in the end zone on a missed field goal it’s a touchback. Part of me wonders why coaches just don’t try to kick a field goal into the end zone instead of punting. It’s a weird rule that should be changed.

Finally, on the list is some success for teams outside of high school football. Baker and Northwest had outstanding seasons and the Chiefs could have the best season in recent memory. In a lot of ways, success breeds success. The better the Chiefs are the more interest there is in football that filters on down the food chain.

Now, where are the Christmas cookies.
