The postseason is here in Missouri and with the changes instituted by the Missouri State High School Activities Association it should be a very interesting late October and November.

Four years ago MSHSAA started to rotate the bracket instead of the traditional district 1 vs. 2 and 3 vs. 4 which usually pitted the east side of the state against the west. In that time we had a state title game that featured two non-St. Louis for the first time in the history of the playoffs. This year the districts have been rotated in all six classes which means there is a good possibility we could see some even better matchups in the postseason.

The one class that could be very interesting is in Class 4. This year districts 5 and 6 are on one side of the bracket while 7 and 8 are on the other. District 5 features the top two ranked teams in Class 4 in Webb City and Carl Junction while District 6 features No. 4 Harrisonville along with a one-loss Center team. District 8 features and 8-1 Kearney team that is ranked No. 5 while District 7 features No. 7 ranked Hannibal.

If the districts had just been 1-4 on one side and 5-8 on the other eight of the top 10 ranked teams would have been on one side of the bracket this makes it much more equitable and competitive. I think that is great for everyone involved and it helps for more competitive balance.

Ok, while it looks like this was all done by design it wasn’t. It just worked out that way. No matter how it happened it’s going to be great. Other classes have some great matchups as well including the possibility of Blue Springs South coming through one side of the bracket while all of the other Kansas City teams are on the other.

Who knows what will happen but it is going to be a great next six weeks. I can’t wait.
