A week ago I had no idea when this year’s high school football season started. Seriously. I was in full on summer mode, working my regular full time job, chasing a toddler, watching the Royals.

Then, whether it was on Twitter or Facebook I realized practices started this week.

What’s crazy is how quickly that switch can go back on to thinking about football, especially at the high school level, almost constantly. Perhaps my surprise was because practices started on August 3, which seems 10 days or so earlier than many years. Whatever, I’ll take it.

I don’t think I’m alone either. My favorite Sunflower League coach I follow on twitter Jeff Gourley (@GourleyFootball) sent out this tweet on Sunday afternoon:

“MO schools start football TOMORROW, while KS schools sit on our hands for TWO MORE WEEKS! Hard to get ahead giving up a 2 week head start!”

Gourley, the Olathe South head coach, is saying what every coach and player on the Kansas side is thinking. Most schools will already be in session before they finally take to the practice field.

Even guys who don’t talk a lot of high school football were discussing with me on twitter about the best running backs we saw play in the late 80’s and early 90’s. For the record he went with Butler’s Robbie Allen while I went with Archie’s Brad Hocker. (Sorry, it was before PrepsKC, our worlds were a lot smaller. But hey, they combined for 16,000 career yards.)

The main point is this, the season is here and I like many of you am ready for things to get started

From an on-the-field standpoint I think this could be a fun year with no clear-cut favorites that everyone is chasing. To me that’s what makes a season fun from a 30,000-foot view. Teams that are the favorites early on could end up playing a road game in the first round of districts.

Even though there are no teams that are sure-fire picks for the dome less than a week into practices, we’ll all start hearing some buzz over the next few weeks as teams take part in jamborees.

I think I speak for the rest of the writers at PrepKC.com when I say we can’t wait for it to get started either.
