Coach Profile: Lawrence's Dirk Wedd 8/3
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
Dirk Wedd has seen a lot in his time as a coach. The Lawrence head coach has been a part of the many successes for the Lions as both a head coach and an assistant.
Wedd graduated from Lawrence in 1970 and after a time spent as a college assistant coach he returned to his alma mater in 1990. During the 1990s Wedd was a member of Dick Purdy’s staff that won five straight titles to start the decade and six straight dating back to 1989.
Wedd has had many memorable moments coaching but one that has stuck out was the 1995 season in which his son was a member of the Lions state champion team. Other great memories were his 2005 team that went 10-2 which is the best record under Wedd.
“As a Head Coach going 10-2 in 2005 with maybe the most over achieving team I was ever associated with was special,” Wedd said. “Another moment that sticks out was in 1982 being the O-Line coach at Wichita State and beating KU 13-10.”
Wedd continues his role leading the Chesty Lions and this could be another special year. Lawrence brings back a strong group and could be a player in what looks to be a wide open Sunflower League in 2015.
