We are just a few weeks away from the beginning of the summer season. I love the regular season but there is something about summer workouts, camps and 7-on-7 that really builds the excitement for the coming games.

For me it’s the ability to see a lot of teams and players in one place. Team individual camps allow you to see which players have taken a big step forward and start putting together on what a team may look like down the line.

That being said you have to be careful to let excitement run away with you based on some drills and practice scrimmages. Players can shine in the summer but sometimes the lights are a little bright on Friday nights in the fall.

Teams can also look like world beaters. A team can run all over another squad in June but not be able to gain a first down in September. Each team uses the summer to work on different things and some teams may be way ahead of others.

Either way it is a fun measuring stick to get out and see where teams are at. The last few seasons there have been a few hot spots that have become annual events for PrepsKC. Blue Valley and Lee’s Summit North each have 7-on-7 tournaments that draw a lot of good teams. Blue Springs, Blue Springs South, Lafayette County and Oak Park all host good team camps that bring together teams from both sides of the state line.

For individual skill work Blue Valley hosts a lineman challenge that is probably my favorite event of the summer. There are other camps like the Blue Springs quarterback/receiver camp and this year there is a USA Football Regional Development camp where players can start working toward a possible spot on the USA Football National team.

That’s a lot but there is even more. Summer is almost here and I can’t wait.
