Every successful program is made up of the hard work of many people. While the players and coaches get all the recognition there are many more who are integral to the wins on the field.
As teams get ready for summer work this is the time of year when programs are looking for volunteers that are a part of everything the team will do. I’m talking about the managers.
It used to be there was an announcement made and interested people would go and sign up. Well it’s 2015 and there are better ways to drum up interest. At Winnetonka the football team made a video that was played on the school’s internal TV station. Two players encouraged people to sign up and become a part of the team. It’s great to see players taking ownership of the program and having a little fun at the same time.
While some may think managers are not part of the program you only need to attend one summer workout to see what they do. Managers are out in the heat and cold. They spend as much time getting ready for the game as the players and coaches and are stay long after the activity is completed.
My sister in-law was a manager on her high school team for all four years of high school. Her senior year the team won the state title. I can remember her asking me if she should get a ring like the players. I told her absolutely. She put in the time and earned that ring just like everyone else.
So with this being the time of year when we are just about to get going let’s honor the team managers across the Metro. They do great work and keep the programs running. If you are a current manager I say thanks, if you are thinking about becoming a manager, I say go for it.
