Well, here we are. The Kansas playoffs are here. It’s time for the real fun to begin.

There’s some drama afoot in Class 5A and Class 4A (I and II), well, aside from the Bishop Miege train, but the real drama seems to be residing in the Class 6A ranks.

There are plenty of questions heading into the 6A playoffs on the Kansas side — even though there are two undefeated teams on what many are thinking are on a collision course.

Not so fast.

There are at least four teams that have a real shot at representing the eastern side of the state in the Class 6A state title game. And this Friday night we get to see the chase for the title begin, in earnest.

Here’s a look at the week 1 slate in Kansas Class 6A:

Lawrence (5-4) at Shawnee Mission East (9-0)
This looks like a whitewashing waiting to happen. Eh, eh, eh. Don’t sleep on the Lions. They have a dynamic defensive end in Price Morgan who is as good as anyone in the Sunflower League. The offensive pop of JD Woods, the league’s leading rusher, gives the Lions a chance any night. But they will have their hands full with Gunnar England, Wyatt Edmisten, Alec Dean, Kyle Ball and the rest of the Lancers. They’re not undefeated and averaging just an eyelash less than 50 points a game for no reason. They are flat-out good. Gonna take a special night for the Lions to stay close in this one.

SM North (2-7) at Olathe North (9-0)
A decade ago, this was the marquee matchup in the Sunflower League. Not so much right now, but let’s not sell the Indians short here. SM North put together a couple of wins to finish the season to get back to the post season after a long drought. Venus Triplett, Cole Murphy, Josh Moore and the list goes on and on for North. The Indians counter with the top passer Will Schneider in the league and the top receiver in Nick Perez. Should be a good one, but, again, gonna take a special night to knock off Olathe North.

Olathe South (7-2) at SM West (5-4)
This is a rematch of a week 5 game that saw Olathe South win 31-21. West has been up and down all year. South has been flying under the radar for most of the season. They are probably still licking their wounds after getting smacked around by Blue Valley two weeks ago. Jake Seurer and the Falcons have their hands full in what could be the most competitive of the first round matchups.

SM South (3-6) at Blue Valley (8-1)
The two 9-0 teams get the accolades. The 8-1 Tigers should be in the same discussion. The Tigers beat Olathe South 49-0 two weeks ago and are rolling behind a solid line, a thunder and lightning running back combo of William Evans and AJ Totta, stellar quarterback play from Colton McCumber, and talented receiver led by Ryan Cyr. Look out SM South and look out the rest of Class 6A, the Tigers will have something to say about this before it’s over.

There may not be a whole heck of a lot of intrigue in the week 1 matchups, but they sure as heck will be fun to watch.
