Through the Uprights: Adam Sullivan 10/28
By Adam Sullivan PrepsKC Columnist
Week nine on the Kansas side is like no other. Dreams will be made this week, and so will heartbreak.
It’s the final week of district football, and for some this week could be the last time they put on those pads for good as few move on to play collegiate football. This week it’s more than just a game, it’s more than just a memory, it’s how you’re going to be remembered.
For teams like Olathe South, Blue Valley Northwest, Olathe Northwest and Lawrence this week could be your season. You have one game left to claim a spot in a playoff game next week. One game left to assure the student body a pep assembly sometime next week. One game left to give your parents another tailgate before the game. It all comes down to this, one game.
For teams that have already assured themselves a spot in post-season play, this week is all about seeding. For Leavenworth a victory over Lansing would almost guarantee a number three seed in the playoffs, which is big for two reasons. First, a win will give Leavenworth a home game in the first round of the playoffs, something that hasn’t happened in my lifetime. Second, it’ll keep them on the opposite side of the bracket from Saint Thomas Aquinas, which looks to be the number one team in 5A.
With a win over Topeka this week, Free State would not only claim a district crown but also be chosen as a host for the opening round of the playoffs. Now, home-field advantage may not mean as much as we think it does, but in this case it’s everything. Free State is now on the west side of 6A pairings which means if it doesn’t win districts, it’ll likely face an opening game at Hutchinson which is around a four-hour bus ride.
For the passionate and casual football fans there’s no hiding that this week is huge. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
