Before this last weekend I thought I had a pretty good grasp on where everything was headed on the Missouri side.

But man, what a weekend for high school football, especially when it came to upsets.

So here’s some of what we know heading into the final three weeks of the regular season and also what we don’t know.

What we do know

  • Blue Springs South got no favors from the schedule makers. After facing Blue Springs a week after its first loss in nearly 24 months, the Jaguars get to face Lee’s Summit West, which last week had its own 15-game winning streak snapped.
  • West Platte may have picked up the best small-class win of the year so far. Hamilton is a good football team, and West Platte is making a case with its 32-28 win that it’s a force to be contended with in Class 1.
  • With a Royals win, athletic directors could have an interesting situation on their hands. The Royals would likely play the late game on Friday night in the American League Divisional Series. That could mean small crowds if the casual and not so casual high school football fan decides to watch baseball.

For my money, I say if we can move games back or up because of impending heat or rain, we can surely adjust our schedules for some playoff games. Let me know if I need to be there at 6 on Friday night or, even better, at 10 on Saturday morning.

What we don’t know

  • Just how good is Platte County. For what it’s worth, I think this could be one of their best teams in the last five seasons, and Friday they’ll have a chance to prove that. The Pirates best win has been against Winnetonka and now with a win against Kearney, they could be considered the Kansas City area favorite in Class 4.
  • Who the favorite in Class 6 is. Each year it’s easy to say the best team in Kansas City is the favorite to win the state title in Missouri’s largest class.

I still think that’s the case, but who is the best team? A week ago I would have said Blue Springs or Lee’s Summit West.

If nothing else we’ve seen that a handful of teams have a legit ability to make a run for the title if they can string together four good performances.
