We are less than two weeks away from the start of high school football — in Kansas.

Yeah, yeah, Missouri rolled it out this past weekend, is back at it this Friday and will be a full two games in before the games begin on the Kansas side, but this year, it will be well worth the wait.

Thanks to a bit of new scheduling over here in Kansas, week No. 1 is shaping up to be the best opening week on the eastern side of the state in, well, forever.

Normally, it’s just a matter of hitting the ground running with some run-of-the-mill league games. Not this year, though.

This year, week no. 1 is an opportunity for schools to spice things up a bit.

All four Olathe schools open against some not-so-familiar opponents.

Olathe East opens against Garden City and Olathe Northwest opens against Hays. The best thing about this one? They both open at home on Friday night on the same field at CBAC.

Huh? Well, Olathe is rolling out new artificial turf this year at ODAC and CBAC, East will open against Garden City at 5:30 p.m. and Northwest will play Hays at 8:30. It’s a double-header the likes of which many have never seen.

Olathe North travels to play Heritage, Ark. in week no. 1 to get a taste of what Arkansas has to offer. And South travels to Hutchinson to take on the perennial state power Salthawks.

Former Hutchinson head coach Randy Dreiling makes his KC debut at Mill Valley as he takes the reigns at St. Thomas Aquinas.

In other not-too-often seen games, Leavenworth plays Great Bend, Shawnee Mission Northwest takes on Blue Valley and Lawrence takes on BV West.

In what may be the most interesting game of the night, defending Class 6A state runner up Shawnee Mission East takes on Gardner-Edgerton. Can the Lancers hang on to the momentum they created last year? Can the Blazers stay on the eight- or nine-win wagon that they have been rolling in for a few years?

Sure, we still have to wait for another couple of weeks, but man, it’s going to be fun once it finally gets here. Let’s see how these bigger class teams fair against some new competition.
