Coach Profile: Baldwin's Mike Berg 6/27
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
Mike Berg began his coaching career as a college assistant and thought that would be his path. But that all changed and now he has spent the last 17 years as a high school coach at Baldwin.
After a standout college career at Baker Berg moved on to the staff at his alma mater. After a few years there the opening came at Baldwin and Berg has been the head coach ever since. For Berg the move from Baker to Baldwin meant he has spent most of his life in just two places, in Baldwin and Concordia, Mo. where he went to high school.
During his time at Baldwin the school has become one of the better teams in the Frontier League. This past season they won the always tough Frontier on their way to an 11-1 mark and a trip to the Kansas 4A quarterfinals.
In all the Bulldogs have been to the postseason 10 times in Berg’s 17 years with a trip to the 4A semifinals in 2007 as the high water mark.
This summer Berg was selected to be the head coach for the Kansas squad in the annual Country Mart Kansas vs. Missouri All-Star Game. Missouri edged Kansas 22-21 in a game that went right down to the wire but Berg had the chance to coach his son Chad who played in the game.
