Coach Profile: Smithville coach Greg Smith 6/13
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
It’s been a busy summer for Smithville’s Greg Smith. The Warriors coach is busy getting ready for his 13th season leading Smithville while also putting together the Missouri team and coaching staff for this year’s Country Mart Kansas vs. Missouri All-Star game.
It’s a challenge but something Smith said he has enjoyed.
“It’s a great group of kids and I am really excited about the opportunity to coach these guys,” Smith said. “Obviously they are all great football players and it’s my challenge to get them all on the same page and going in the same direction.
“We are excited to see these guys come together and gel and be a part of a team.”
His philosophy over the years has been shaped by some of the best coaches in the Metro and he said he tries to stick to his core values when coaching his team.
“I’ve learned a lot from coaches like Greg Oder, Mike Redwine and Mark Thomas,” Smith said. “For my team I always try to stress discipline, citizenship, commitment, loyalty and integrity among other things.”
Those qualities have served Smith well off of the field. He is held in high regard by his peers in the Metro. He served as president of the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association and currently is a member of the group’s board.
“Seeing former players who have grown to be responsible men and leaders in the community is the high point of my job,” Smith said.
