View From the Press Box: Dion Clisso 6/7
By Dion Clisso PrepsKC Managing Editor
This week marks the start of my favorite part of the offseason. The month of June is the best time outside of games for high school football.
From the Country Mart Kansas vs. Missouri All-Star game to 7-on-7 and team camps there is something almost every day. This is the time teams start to find out what they have and if the offseason weights and workouts have taken hold.
I got my first look at a few teams this weekend when I went to the team camp at Lafayette County High School. The host school was joined by several area schools along with a few that turned the two-day event into an out of town excursion.
While team camps in the first week of June don’t decide any conference titles there is sure a lot that can be learned. For a school like Excelsior Springs the large number of players it brought to Higginsville was an indication of the high level of interest and enthusiasm that surrounds that program.
Other schools like Lafayette County and Oak Grove are coming off another set of strong seasons and the work that was done was an attempt to pick up right where they left off last November.
There was a time where I felt like 7-on-7 was the best part of the summer. While I still enjoy that the team camps with live contact really can show me more. Don’t get me wrong I still think there is value in 7-on-7 but nothing beats a full scrimmage.
Get ready it’s going to be a great summer with lots of storylines that will build right to the season. June is here strap it up and take the field.
