One great thing about the Country Mart Kansas vs. Missouri All Star Game put on by the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association is seeing players from different leagues and areas of the Metro play together. Each year we get to see athletes from smaller conferences make plays right alongside athletes from some of the bigger schools.
This year the Kansas squad is well represented with players from all over the Metro. Two leagues, the Kaw Valley and KCAL, have combined for nine players. Those leagues have been improving over the last few years and it is great to see them gain such strong representation in the game.
Those leagues really represent the Northwest section of the Metro well. It should be exciting to see Lansing’s Khalil Bailey go up against some of the defensive backs on the Missouri side like Jackson Newman from Staley and Tyler Titus from Fort Osage.
One thing that is even more interesting about the KVL and KCAL is the rivalry between the leagues. It happens in football where the bump into each other here and there at district time but it really gets going in other sports.
All you have to do is look at the postseason basketball tournaments to see there is a lot of competition. In fact they have their own all-star game that will be held Monday April 21 at Kansas City Kansas Community College. It’s a great event that feature boys’ and girls’ games, three-point and dunk contest.
So if you can’t wait until the football game in June you can catch some of the top athletes like Bailey on the hardwoods. For more information on the game go to www.shukc.com.
