Every year at this time the Greater Kansas City Football Coaches Association gives away 22 $1,000 scholarships to football players from both sides of the state line.
The funds for the scholarships are donated by The McCarthy Auto Group as just one of the many ways it helps supports athletes and students across the Metro.
There are 11 winners from Kansas and 11 winners from Missouri and the athletes always have impressive classroom and community resumes that match or exceed what they have accomplished on the football field.
I have been honored to be the master of ceremonies for this even since 2010 and each year the group is impressive. These players are focused on the field and in the classroom and somehow find time to make an impact in their communities.
Every year at this time I am reminded of conversations with parents I have had over the last 20 years I have covered high school sports. Time and again parents would ask about which sport or school was best for their child to earn a college scholarship.
The answer has always been an easy one. The best chance to earn money for college is in the classroom. A high GPA or a 30 on the ACT is the quickest ticket to college. Other activities such as sports are just icing on the cake.
The full-ride sports scholarship is one of the hardest to earn. The reality is there are only a few sports that offer complete full rides. Football and basketball at the Division I level are the few but after that, the money is partial.
Baseball, soccer, golf, swimming are great sports but in college they are the ones that struggle to get funding just to survive let alone hand out a ton of scholarship money.
My advice is always the same. Take care of the classroom then worry about the field. If you are good in the classroom the schools will find you.
