The weather finally feels like football outside and almost perfectly in sync with the drop in temperatures, we’re starting to see which teams are prepping for a run deep into November

Across the top classes Blue Springs, Lee’s Summit, Fort Osage and Lee’s Summit West all seem to be in shape to make big runs.

In Class 4 Pleasant Hill and Harrisonville appear to be battling not only for perhaps playoff seeding but also the best record in Cass County.

Here’s where things start to change up though.

Take a look at Class 1.

With just three weeks left in the regular season, it’s anyone’s guess who will represent Kansas City in the smallest 11-man class.

With the current district setup a pair of area teams could make a run. Two teams however look to have the best shot.
Both Hamilton and Cass-Midway are in the top 4 of the latest Class 1 state poll.

Penney, the defending Class 1 state champions, on paper would seem the most likely. At 5-2 this season, the Hornets suffered their first regular season loss since 2007 when they fell Lathrop 35-17 in Week 3. Lawson handed Penney its second loss last week so a repeat run to the title looks in question.

Whether the Hornets are coming back to the pack or the pack is going to the Hornets, we’ll likely find out in the final week of the regular season when the Hornets face off against KCI Conference foe East Buchanan, who is undefeated.
On the complete opposite side of the metro, Cass-Midway is showing signs of being a real threat in Class 1 as well. The Vikings have already sewn up the Western Missouri Conference title with only Rich Hill left on their schedule. In the first five weeks they beat Osceola, Drexel and Adrian, three teams that are a combined 13-5 by a combined score of 99-22.

The wildcard with the WEMO conference is that they join with Skyline to complete a district and then play teams on the southern half of the state.

Unlike the other Missouri classes where teams eventually eliminate each other, with this setup it could be a situation where a team like Midway or another WEMO team and Hamilton, East Buchanan or another KCI team, could play each other in the title game.

A lot would have to happen before that could take place (like someone beating Valle).

While no one knows who will come out of the area in Class 1 or any class for that matter, it should make for a fun next few weeks as the postseason gets ready to start.
