It’s all about to get real – real fun
OK, it’s party time. Time for the red shirts and pennies to be put away for a while.
It’s time to line up against a team with different color helmets. It’s time to play some high school football. It’s go time.
No more intra-squad scrimmages. No more jamborees. No more shells at practice. No more waiting.
This is what we’ve been waiting for. And trust me, it’s been worth the wait.
The games begin this weekend in Missouri and take flight in Kansas next weekend.
With one week until the kickoff of the Kansas slate, it’s a perfect time to look at few of the big games in the first few weeks of the season on the West side of the state line.
Week 1
Gardner-Edgerton at Blue Valley — Two EKL heavyweights butting heads right out of the chute. Even though it’s only week one, loser will have some work to do in the tough EKL.
Olathe East at Olathe North — Doesn’t get much better than this to start the season. Two old “friends” get together to start the season in a game that has always been one of the best rivalry games since East opened its doors in 1992. Some of the best regular season and playoff games in over the last two decades have involved these two teams.
Week 2
Blue Valley West at Aquinas — A rematch of what I thought was the best game of the year last season Aquinas won at Blue Valley District Activity Complex in triple overtime when West went for it on fourth down and came up short in the third OT. This time, the game will be played in the friendly confines at Aquinas.
Olathe South at Shawnee Mission West — A battle of the last two Class 6A champions. Doesn’t get much better.
Week 3
Eudora at DeSoto — Always a classic between these two K-10 neighbors. DeSoto has played second fiddle most of the time, but who knows what will happen with a new coach (former Aquinas and Leavenworth coach Kevin Kopecky) walking the sidelines at Eudora.
Olathe Northwest at Shawnee Mission East — The Chip Sherman Bowl. Sherman’s Olathe Northwest Ravens take on his former team, Shawnee Misson East, in this week three doosie that is a big game for the Ravens, if they want to establish themselves as a threat in Class 6A.
Week 4
Shawnee Mission West at Lawrence-Free State — Might be the Sunflower League game of the year. Big things are expected from these two teams. A must see.
Paola at Eudora — A Class 4A showdown. Always entertaining.
Bishop Miege at Gardner-Edgerton — The Blazers’ Traevohn Wrench and Miege’s McKinley Johnson take center stage on this one. Two of the top skill players on the Kansas side square off.
Week 5
BV Northwest at Blue Valley — Time for the cream to start rising to the top. This is could be a statement game for BV Northwest or more of the same form Blue Valley.
Olathe South at Olathe East — Always a great matchup. Is this the year, the Hawks rule the roost in Olathe?
Lawrence-Free State at Olathe North — Everyone loves Free State this year. Everyone knows that Gene Wier and North are capable of. North will be looking to start off a brutal five-game stretch that ends the season with a win against the Firebirds.
Weeks 6 and on? Stay tuned.
