Football is my passion and my business but I am a fan of all sports. I am a big fan of the Royals and Chiefs and have a few favorite college teams I follow as well.
One thing I love about living in a city that has professional sports teams is how those teams can bring a city together for a season or even for a day. Yesterday was the annual home opener for the Royals and if you wondered if Kansas City had a passion for its sports then the excitement at The K should have those questions answered. I love baseball and it looks like it could be a fun summer following the Royals.
The passion you see on opening day or during Chiefs games in the fall starts at our area high schools every Friday night. It doesn’t matter what the school or the level of success of the program, high school football has deep connections in every school district and community throughout the Metro.
When you take that shared passion for teams like the Royals and Chiefs and shrink it down to the high school side it becomes even more intense and special.
While we love the local pro teams we rarely know the players or coaches personally. At the high school level almost everyone knows someone who has played or is playing and if nothing else they might have been a graduate that wants to see their alma mater do well.
You might be friends with the coaches or just be a teacher who works in the district. Either way Friday nights bring everyone together unlike any other event. When you ratchet that passion up to the pro level you see spectacular events like opening day or a packed Chiefs game.
Those events are great and I love every minute of them but I will take a packed high school stadium on a crisp night in October every time.
